360alex
I'm 24, have my own place with a dog and a girl, and most of the time (24/7) the saharasmoke hookah is proudly sitting on my downstairs coffee table. However, when parents or other relatives come over, I feel compelled to hide the hookah and accessories in the unfinished basement. Its not that I dont want them to know I smoke, because they do (not hookah). The thing is, most "late people" look at a hookah and immediately think NHT NHT NHT NHT! Anyway - I was wondering if any of the other younger people on here feel the same way. The hookah is a beautiful device and deserves NOT to be hidden away like some NHT related items. Hopefully more people will realize that the hookah is for enjoying shisha only .. and ALSO compliments nearly any decor.
Canon
my mom knows i smoke, she knows about the hookah and hates it. im sure if you showed them the tobacco you smoke and explain it to them then they would understand, try the parents first. mushrat
Unfortunate that instead of using the oppertunity to educate people about the hookah you hide it like you ARE doing soemthing wrong with it.Have you considered a lamp shade and just sitting it on a shelf? Dirk Skene
Hoohak is nothing to be ashamed of. You are an adult. You are not breaking the law. Leave the shishia by the pipe when they come over. When they look at it, pick up the tobacco, open it & say something like "yea, and the tobacco mix is so full of fruit juice & molassas you have to keep it lit with charcole" I had no problems with my family. Most were US military and knew of them there. My other side is a bunch of Iranians . NOOOO problemo there.
Doubon
it makes for nice conversation if they're open minded. plus it's basically a beautiful piece of art.
r1v3th3ad
I'm very open with mine with my family...sure I catch hell here and there, but I immediately defend...My parents are okay with it but would prefer I dont smoke tobacco at all(pack of cigs a day)...My grandfather calls it the Hookah-Lei-Lee But I've got aunts and uncles who once in a blue moon want to talk smack and I shut them up pretty fast.Be loud, be proud, blow a cloud

Hopefully more people will realize that the hookah is for enjoying shisha only .. and ALSO compliments nearly any decor. well I sort of had to tell my parents about my hookah (i'm 23) because I was looking into opening a local hookah bar at my college and I wanted to get their input and see if they knew anyone looking to invest lol. But I did a sketch sitting in a restaurant and explained how it was used and they even asked me last christmas if I wanted to bring it home and smoke it on the porch. (dad's got asthma since he used to smoke so many cigars years before I was around lol)But my gfs mother saw it the other day for the first time and asked what it was an i attempted to explain but somehow she related it to a documentary on Jimmy Chong (cheech and chong) and believed it to be a type of drug pipe no matter how i used it. So everyone takes it differently but I'm sure it's a lot easier than telling htem you're addicted to an illegal drug or something lol.

mix_tape
I still live at home and when I bought my first hookah my mom was super pissed because she thought it was NHT but since then I've showed her and my dad how it works. My mom actually is falling love with them and the look. They line my room and my mom is nerdy and likes to show them off and explains to our relatives what they are. She doesn't like to smoke them but she loves to watch the smoke and she usually likes the smell that fills the room. My dad and I smoked my hookahs after xmas dinner and got a few of my relatives into it. I didn't feel the need to hide it from my parents, they are pretty open minded and like other people have stated hookahs can be so beautiful! Why not show them off. NickReppinThe909
i moved back in with my dad because i couldnt justify $900 a month for rent and he is a very close minded person so i am forced to keep the fact that i smoke hidden from him
hookah hippie
I own 11 hookahs and when my parents visit I put them in the closet just to avoid any problems they know what it is and what it is used for but I would rather avoid a statement like, smoking bad for you, or something like that
antouwan
i live at home, with the parents, and go to college, i have 5 pipes and my dad is lebanese so he knows what they're for, but my parents CONSTANTLY give me shit about smoking (any kind of tobacco) even if i only smoke outside...kinda sucks a little bit
natgnat
My parents don't like it... my mom is Egyptaian, so at least I never went through the "OMGNHT" nonsense. I tend to not smoke it often because I don't really enjoy hearing crap from them. Solution = moving out. Which I'm working on. Haha.
Nebulaluna
This is all still pretty new for me. I just started smoking over the summer. My family doesn't know yet. I have a feeling that they would be upset, mainly because I stopped smoking cigarettes like 7 years ago. They were all really excited about that. I haven't told them yet, but I love my hookah and I will get around to telling them. The only person I actively hide it from is my roommates mom. She would kind of freak out, and since we both live here I feel the need to be accommodating.

linebacker131
i think its easier to hide it then it is to explain what its for and have to go into great detail of why you like it and such. Thats my opinion.

ambuletzd2h
When I got my first hookah my mom was alittle mad about it but I showed both my dad and mom how everything worked and I smoke all the time in my basement and watch movies. They like the smell of the flavors but it does get very smokey sometimes so I gotta limit myself if I have family over.
